Our History
The Schuylkill Navy of Philadelphia was established in 1858 — making it one of the oldest sports governing bodies in the United States. It began with nine founding clubs and approximately 300 members rowing on the Schuylkill River. Today, the organization has grown to 13 member clubs representing hundreds of active rowers, coaches, and community members along Boathouse Row.
For over 167 years, the Schuylkill Navy has governed rowing activity on the Schuylkill River, coordinating the river schedule, managing major regattas, and setting the safety and conduct standards that keep the river safe and accessible for everyone.
Mission: The Schuylkill Navy of Philadelphia is dedicated to expanding racial diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Philadelphia rowing community. We stand against racist speech and behaviors and strive to make Boathouse Row and its member organizations a welcoming space for all.
What We Do
The Schuylkill Navy serves as the coordination body between its 13 member clubs, the City of Philadelphia, and state regulatory agencies. Our core responsibilities include:
- Permitting and coordinating all organized events on the Schuylkill River
- Enforcing safety standards and river rules for all users
- Managing major regattas including the Stotesbury Cup, Independence Day Regatta, and Head of the Schuylkill
- Advocating for the maintenance and improvement of Boathouse Row and the river corridor
- Supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives across the rowing community
