In 1858, nine rowing clubs along the Schuylkill River joined together to form the Schuylkill Navy of Philadelphia, creating one of the oldest sports governing bodies in the United States. This year, we mark 167 years of that tradition.
From Nine Clubs to Thirteen
What began with nine founding clubs and roughly 300 members has grown into a 13-club organization representing hundreds of active rowers, coaches, and community members. From Bachelors Barge Club to Gillin Boat Club — which joined the Navy in 2004 — each club brings its own history and character to the waterfront.
Our Commitment to Inclusion
The Schuylkill Navy is committed to expanding racial diversity, equity, and inclusion across the Philadelphia rowing community. We believe the river belongs to everyone, and we're actively working to lower barriers to participation through programs, partnerships, and outreach.
Looking Ahead
As we approach the Stotesbury Cup's centennial in 2026 and continue building toward a more inclusive rowing community, we're grateful for the clubs, volunteers, sponsors, and athletes who make this organization what it is.
